On Sunday, at least five people were killed and over 100 injured in a Ukrainian bombing of the Crimean peninsula. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that the responsibility for the bombing falls on Washington for providing weapons to Ukraine, as well as the authorities in Kiev, and warned that the attacks will not go unanswered.

Sevastopol has been a frequent target of attacks and is located in Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014. The Ukrainian army reportedly hit Sevastopol with cluster ballistic missiles during the daytime, causing casualties and damage. Russia responded by bombing Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second city, leaving casualties and significant damage.

The Ukrainian military used five ATACMS missiles in the attack on Sevastopol, with four of them being intercepted. The United States had recently sent longer-range ATACMS missiles to Ukraine to help them strike beyond the front line. In May, Washington allowed Ukraine to use American weapons to attack military targets in Russian territory near Kharkiv following a Russian ground offensive in the region.

In addition to the attacks on Sevastopol and Kharkiv, a Ukrainian drone attack in the Russian region of Belgorod resulted in one death and three injuries. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on allied countries to help Ukraine intensify its attacks on Russian soil, stating that they are determined to destroy terrorists within their territory. The situation remains tense as both sides continue to exchange attacks and casualties.
