Ubisoft’s “XDefiant” is the latest game to be dubbed as a “game killer,” aiming to dethrone the dominant first-person shooter franchise of “Call of Duty.” Despite some close contenders such as “Battlefield: Bad Company 2,” Call of Duty has managed to maintain its stronghold on the genre. However, XDefiant is different from its predecessors and offers an exciting alternative for fans of traditional FPS gameplay or those eager for new experiences.

Developed by Ubisoft San Francisco, XDefiant is a free-to-play multiplayer shooter with two teams of six players competing in various modes. Drawing comparisons with Call of Duty is inevitable, as both games provide fast-paced combat experiences focused on aim and reflexes. However, XDefiant isn’t just a Call of Duty copy; it also incorporates elements from Overwatch. Four out of five game modes in XDefiant borrow mechanics from Overwatch, while one mode resembles Call of Duty’s Kill Confirmed. The game features prototypes or heroes with unique appearances, personalities, and special abilities, enhancing gameplay.

The classes in XDefiant are categorized by factions from various Ubisoft franchises, each with distinct attributes and abilities. These factions fulfill roles similar to traditional game classes, with unique passive attributes and powerful Ultras. The absence of skill-based matchmaking in the game differentiates it from Call of Duty, providing an experience that prioritizes variety and avoids lengthy wait times and predictability.

Despite its benefits, XDefiant has flaws, particularly in its free-to-play mechanism. Progression can be slow due to high experience point requirements for unlocking content. The game’s business model negatively impacts players by potentially forcing them to make purchases to progress at an enjoyable pace. However, these issues do not detract from the overall enjoyment of the game and provide hours of entertainment across various platforms.

In addition to XDefiant, there are several other notable FPS titles worth exploring. Counter Strike 2 offers improved graphics while maintaining the strategic gameplay that has made it a classic. Halo Infinite delivers exciting combat as a SPARTAN super soldier, appealing to fans of multiplayer shooters. Overwatch 2 continues to attract players with its unique heroes and intense gameplay. Lastly, Valorant combines aspects of Counter-Strike and Overwatch for a strategic and skill-based gaming experience.

Each of these FPS titles offers a unique gaming experience and caters to different preferences
