The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees has approved an agreement for UAB Health System Authority to acquire Ascension St. Vincent’s Health System in central Alabama this fall. As part of the agreement, UAB Health System Authority will take ownership of all Ascension St. Vincent’s care sites, including hospitals in Birmingham, Blount, Chilton, East and St. Clair, the One Nineteen Campus, the Trussville Freestanding Emergency Department, and imaging centers and clinics that are part of Ascension Medical Group.

This acquisition agreement follows the launch of the UAB/Ascension St. Vincent’s Alliance in 2020. Patients will have continued access to the same healthcare services and providers they know and trust, with the added benefit of accessing a larger care network. UAB Health System CEO Dawn Bulgarella, who also serves as CEO of the UAB/Ascension St. Vincent’s Alliance, highlighted the benefits of this acquisition for patients in the region.

The leadership of UAB and Ascension St. Vincent’s sees this as a natural next step in expanding access to sustainable care in Alabama. This transaction will include all current Ascension St. Vincent’s services, facilities, caregivers, and associates, creating a robust network of providers to serve the community. The aim is to ensure that patients receive high-quality, reliable care in a seamless transition to the new ownership structure.

The acquisition is expected to bring many benefits for patients in central Alabama as it allows them to access more comprehensive healthcare services from a larger network of providers while still receiving the same level of care they have come to expect from Ascension St. Vincent’s.

With this move by UAB Health System Authority to acquire Ascension St. Vincent’s Health System, there is no doubt that patients will continue to receive top-notch healthcare services from a wider range of providers while maintaining their trust and confidence in their existing healthcare system.

In summary, this acquisition by UAB Health System Authority is set to bring about significant changes for healthcare services in central Alabama as it expands accessibility and sustainability through a larger network of providers under one umbrella organization.
