The 2023 season saw Tyreek Hill attempt to break Calvin Johnson’s single-season receiving record, but an ankle injury in Week 14 and a missed game in Week 15 halted his progress. Despite leading the league with 1,799 yards, Hill fell short of Johnson’s record of 1,964 yards set in 2012 when Johnson caught 122 passes in 16 games. Before Johnson, Jerry Rice held the record with 1,848 yards in 1995.
In an interview with Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, Johnson acknowledged that records are meant to be broken and it is only a matter of time before someone surpasses his record. Cooper Kupp of the Rams came closest to doing so in the 17-game era, reaching 1,947 yards in 17 games in 2021.
Johnson emphasized the importance of staying healthy during a season as long as there are only six weeks left. He pointed out that Hill experienced challenges with injuries last year which limited him to four catches for 61 yards against the Titans in Week 14 and caused him to miss Week
