UVA Economics Professor Ed Burton believes that the new NIL regulations have the potential to benefit both college athletes and the local economy. Allowing businesses to sponsor student-athes could positively impact the economy, as well as recognize the hard work of student-athletes and their families for reaching the college level.

However, Burton also acknowledges the sacrifices that student-athletes make to compete at the collegiate level, and believes they deserve compensation for their efforts. He warns that increased financial compensation could blur the lines between amateur and professional athletes, potentially leading college sports to become minor leagues for major professional sports rather than focusing on education.

During an interview with WINA Morning News host Jay James, Burton discussed his concerns about the NIL ruling’s potential impact on college sports. He emphasized the importance of balancing economic benefits with educational integrity to ensure that student-athletes prioritize their academic pursuits while competing at the collegiate level.
