The Museum of Science, Boston is set to begin construction on a new space that will transform the Cahners Theater into the Public Science Common. This 10,000-square-foot renovation will serve as the central hub for the museum’s Centers for Public Science Learning.

Todd Sperry, chief marketing officer at the Museum of Science, spoke about the potential of the Public Science Common to host events, lectures, school trips, performances, and other engaging experiences for the public. The museum aims to lead the world in public science engagement through this innovative space.

The new space will feature floor-to-ceiling glass walls with views of the Charles River and Boston on one side and Cambridge on the other. It will accommodate up to 700 people and be equipped with flexible multimedia technology for various events and activities.

Funded by a donation from Bloomberg Philanthropies, the exact cost of the renovation was not disclosed. The Museum of Science anticipates that the Public Science Common will be completed and open to the public in 2026. This project is expected to transform the skyline and offer new opportunities for science education and engagement in Boston.
