A new report published by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences’ Institute of Law has highlighted the significant impact of various technologies on the construction of courts and judicial work in China. Advances in information and digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, 5G, big data, and blockchain have transformed the legal landscape by providing better access to legal services for individuals and departments alike.

The report emphasized that the application of these technologies in courts is crucial for upholding justice, improving judicial efficiency, and modernizing the Chinese legal system. For instance, the Jiangsu High People’s Court has implemented an online system for judicial auction services, while courts in the Yangtze River Delta have established a coordinated platform to share resources and case information.

Numerous courts across China have introduced legal services like online case filing, pretrial mediation, and online payment to help litigants and their lawyers save time and costs. By the end of last year, over 100,000 institutes and 410,000 mediators had successfully resolved 12.04 million civil and administrative disputes through mediation on an online platform established by the Supreme People’s Court.

Moreover, more than 77% of practicing lawyers in China have registered on another online platform to handle case-related affairs like reading legal materials and communicating with judges. The report emphasized that embracing rapid technological development is essential for Chinese courts to continue meeting growing legal demands while enhancing their judicial capabilities.
