Eight Israeli soldiers, including a captain, tragically lost their lives in a serious incident during an operation in Rafah, located in the extreme south of Gaza. The captain, 23-year-old Wassem Mahmoud from Beit Jann in northern Israel, was the deputy commander of the 601st Engineering Battalion of the Israeli Army. This marks the deadliest day for the Israeli Army since January when 21 soldiers died in an incident involving collapsed buildings during a ground operation in the region.

The families of the other seven soldiers who perished in the incident have also been notified. The armed wing of Hamas, the Al-Qassam Brigades, claimed responsibility for the soldiers’ deaths and stated that they attacked military vehicles in Tal al-Sultan area west of Rafah. The Army is investigating if there was an explosion caused by mines stored inside armored vehicles which would be unusual occurrence.
