Three American missionaries, including the daughter and son-in-law of a Missouri congressman, were killed in an attack on an orphanage in Haiti on Friday. The violence in the country has been escalating, with murders, attacks, rapes and kidnappings carried out by armed groups. This has worsened since the end of February, prompting the US State Department to issue a travel advisory warning US citizens against traveling to Haiti due to unpredictable and dangerous security conditions.
Natalie and Davy, who were missionaries working with Haitian children, had recently gotten married and moved to the country. Their work was mainly carried out through Missions in Haiti, an NGO founded by Davy’s parents in 2000. The tragic news was shared by former president Donald Trump, who called for the immediate capture of the perpetrators.
In an effort to contain the violence in Haiti, the interim government has extended the curfew and imposed a state of emergency in the western department. A multinational security mission led by Kenya, with UN approval, is expected to arrive in the country soon to help address the escalating violence and instability.
