Asthma sufferers are being advised to take precautions during thunderstorms to avoid worsening of their condition. During the summer months, strong winds can carry pollen particles deep into the lungs, exacerbating asthma symptoms. According to the NHS, using preventer inhalers before and during storms is crucial in managing symptoms.

The phenomenon known as “thunderstorm asthma” led to a significant increase in hospital admissions for asthma-related issues in Berkshire West, Oxfordshire, and Buckinghamshire in June 2023. Changes in weather, pollen, air pollution, and thunderstorms can all trigger symptoms such as breathlessness, wheezing, and coughing.

To minimize the risk of asthma attacks during thunderstorms, individuals are advised to stay indoors with windows closed and wear a mask when outdoors to reduce pollen exposure. Additionally, carrying a reliever inhaler can help alleviate symptoms during severe thunderstorm events.

By taking these precautions seriously and following the weather forecast alerts for high pollen levels, individuals with asthma can reduce their likelihood of needing emergency assistance during severe thunderstorm events. It is important to remember that even those with “mild” asthma should take their condition seriously as severe and sometimes fatal attacks can occur unexpectedly during thunderstorms.
