Deadly tornadoes swept across the heartland of America overnight, causing severe storms that delayed the start of the Indy 500 in Indianapolis on Sunday. At 11:15 a.m. ET, officials at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway paused pre-race ceremonies and evacuated fans from the grandstands and Snake Pit for their safety.
After about three hours, fans were allowed to return and the green flag was scheduled for 4:44 p.m. ET, four hours later than planned. The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Indianapolis, including the Speedway, on Sunday morning.
Despite the delay caused by the severe weather, officials were able to reschedule the start of the race and ensure the safety of fans and participants at the Indy 500. Forecast models suggest that after the morning storms pass, Indianapolis should see a break in severe weather until the evening.
