The New York Times editorial board has recently urged President Joe Biden to withdraw from the upcoming presidential race, citing concerns over his health following his performance in the first US presidential debate against Donald Trump. In an editorial titled “Time for a Change: President Biden Should Step Aside,” the board argued that Biden failed to reassure the American public of his ability to meet the demands of another term.

The article emphasized Biden’s struggle during the debate to articulate his plans for a second term and to counter Trump’s provocations. The board suggested that Biden is not the same man he was four years ago and urged for more compelling Democratic leaders to present a stronger alternative to Trump.

Following the debate, which took place ahead of the Nov. 5, 2024, election, Biden faced criticism over his performance and concerns about his age and fitness for a second term. In response, Republican representative Chip Roy filed a resolution calling on Vice President Kamala Harris to convene the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment and allow her to act as president. The resolution stated that Biden has shown an inability to discharge the powers and duties of the presidency.
