Wisconsin Lutheran’s Kon Knueppel II and Brookfield East’s Maggie Wanezek were named athletes of the year at the Milwaukee High School Sports Awards show presented by Festival Foods. The event recognized athletes, coaches, and teams from the entire area, with a total of 37 awards being handed out.

Wanezek has been an exceptional performer for the Brookfield East swimming and diving team over the past five years. She has won 10 individual event state titles and her performances have been among the best in state tournament history. Wanezek holds records in the 100-yard backstroke and has been part of top performing relay teams. She has also excelled in the 50 freestyle, and the 100 and 200 individual medleys. Currently committed to the University of Wisconsin, Wanezek is competing at the U.S. Olympic trials.

Knueppel led the Wisconsin Lutheran boys basketball team to an undefeated 30-0 season and a state title. As the sole returning starter, he took on the task of elevating both his own performance and that of his teammates. Knueppel excelled throughout the season, culminating in a standout performance in the state title game. He holds the Vikings’ career points record and has been a leader on and off
