An anonymous Israeli official stated that they will wait for Hamas’ response before making a decision on whether to send a delegation to Egypt. The Hamas delegation is expected to give their response as soon as possible after returning from a meeting in Cairo with Egypt and Qatar, two of the mediator countries. British Foreign Minister David Cameron expressed hope that Hamas would accept the deal, emphasizing the urgent need for a halt to fighting. American Secretary of State Antony Blinken also expressed hope for a favorable response from Hamas to the proposal offered by Israel.
Israel maintains its plan for a possible land offensive on the town of Rafah on the border with Egypt, where Hamas has reportedly positioned four battalions. Negotiations have been ongoing since November, with only a short ceasefire allowing for the release of 80 hostages held by Hamas. Despite ongoing negotiations, Israel has reiterated its readiness to enter Rafah with or without a truce agreement.
