Yesterday, at a Security Council briefing, Hans Grundberg, the United Nations envoy to Yemen, expressed concern about the escalation of conflict and urged all parties to exercise restraint. The Houthi group claimed an American-British bombing of Hodeidah International Airport in western Yemen, which they control.

Grundberg emphasized that further violence would not solve the conflict but instead hinder the opportunity for a peaceful resolution. He urged all parties to show restraint during this delicate stage and emphasized the importance of reaching a peaceful and just solution through dialogue. The envoy continues to work with the parties on the UN roadmap with the support of the international community.

Meanwhile, Martin Griffiths, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, warned of food shortages and cholera spreading in Yemen during the Security Council briefing. Plans are in place to address these issues, but they require prompt funding to prevent further humanitarian crises. Griffiths stressed the importance of achieving peace in Yemen despite regional developments.

Robert Wood, the US representative to the UN, highlighted Houthi attacks in the Red Sea as obstacles to peace in Yemen. He called on the international community to increase support for Yemen to address the humanitarian crisis. The Houthi group claimed an American-British bombing at Hodeidah International Airport on Monday, but there was no immediate confirmation from Washington or London.

Overall, it is clear that cooperation from the international community is crucial if we want to address this humanitarian crisis and support efforts towards lasting peace in Yemen.
