On July 2, 2024, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine released updated information on the losses suffered by the Russian army during military operations in Ukrainian territory since February 24, 2022. This update came on the 860th day of the war, taking into account data from the previous day. According to the report from the General Staff, the losses of the Russian army include approximately 545,090 personnel, 360 airplanes, 326 helicopters, 8107 tanks, 15566 armored personnel carriers, armored vehicles and BMPs, 14655 artillery systems, 874 air defense systems, 1114 multiple launch rocket systems, 2335 cruise missiles and motor vehicles.

However Russian authorities have disputed these figures. They claim that Ukrainian side is disseminating false information about Russian army losses. The media recently reported data from a declassified US intelligence document stating that Russia had lost around 315 thousand servicemen killed or wounded during conflict in Ukraine. This represented around eighty-seven percent of forces initially involved in invasion resulting in significant setbacks to modernization of Russian army.

The exact number of casualties among Russian forces is difficult to determine due to propaganda and disinformation campaigns run by both sides. Confirmed losses according to open sources collected by Mediazona amount to approximately fifty-six thousand people killed or eighty five thousand through inheritance cases but researchers believe actual losses may be much higher. Additionally according to verified UN data over eleven thousand Ukrainian civilians including five hundred minors have been killed with over twenty thousand others injured since February twenty-fourth two thousand fourteen. The UN emphasizes that these figures are likely underreported due to lack of access to some areas and difficulty verifying casualties in real time.
