Barak Ben-Noy, a 53-year-old artist from Pardes Hanna, tragically passed away due to complications of tick-borne typhus. His wife Mati, who had previously suffered from the disease, recognized the symptoms and urged him to seek medical attention after he started feeling ill about three weeks ago.

Barak initially thought he had contracted the coronavirus, but upon visiting the hospital emergency room, he was found to have a rash and spots on his legs. Despite being given antibiotics, his condition rapidly deteriorated and despite efforts to treat him including being put into a medically induced coma and connected to a breathing apparatus, Barak ultimately passed away.

Tick-borne typhus, also known as boutonnese fever, is caused by the bacterium Rickettsia conorii and is transmitted through tick bites. Symptoms can include fever, headache, muscle pain, rash, and in severe cases organ failure. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment with antibiotics are crucial for recovery.

It is important for people to be aware of the symptoms of tick-borne diseases especially during warmer months when ticks are more active. If someone experiences fever, headache, muscle pain and a rash after being in tick prone areas they should seek medical attention immediately. Preventive measures such as using insect repellent wearing protective clothing checking for ticks after being outdoors can help reduce the risk of tick-borne illnesses.
