In the latest episode of “House of the Dragon,” it has been revealed that Westeros’ civil war began because two Targaryens share the same name, sparking laughter among fans. The brewing civil war officially started in season one, episode eight, after King Viserys Targaryen caused confusion over his successor in episode seven.

At the beginning of episode eight, Viserys confirms that his first daughter, Rhaenyra, is his heir. However, just before his death, he mentions a prince named Aegon who was prophesied to unite the realm. His wife, Alicent Targaryen, believes he is referring to their son Aegon II and places him on the throne in the following episode.

In season two, episode three clarifies that Viserys was actually referring to Aegon the Conqueror, his ancestor. In the latest episode, Rhaenyra tries to prevent the impending civil war by discussing the situation with Alicent Targaryen in King’s Landing.

Alicent reveals to Rhaenyra that Viserys thought Aegon was destined to fulfill the prophecy of “The Song of Ice and Fire” created by Aegon the Conqueror. This misunderstanding between two Targaryens named Aegon ultimately leads to the Dance of the Dragons war.

The new storyline deviates from George R. R. Martin’s “Fire and Blood” novel but fans have embraced this change and are creating memes about Alicent’s realization of her mistake. If there’s one thing that can be learned from this conflict it is perhaps for future generations of Targaryens to choose different names for their children so as not to cause any confusion or misunderstandings that may lead to wars like this one.

Overall, fans are loving this new twist on a familiar story and are eagerly waiting for what happens next in “House of the Dragon.”
