The running back position is typically not a high-value investment for teams, as they tend to focus on rookie contracts and short-term deals. This logic supports the Pittsburgh Steelers’ decision not to lock Najee Harris into another year before the deadline approached. Although it may not have come as a surprise, it certainly raised the stakes for the upcoming 2024 season.

When asked about his decision, Steelers owner Khan remained tight-lipped. Meanwhile, Harris chose to avoid discussing the matter entirely by declining interviews during minicamp. He promised to speak with reporters during training camp, choosing instead to let his performance on the field speak for itself.

Harris understands that his best response can only be delivered through his game. Under the leadership of former Falcons head coach Arthur Smith, Harris has been in a promising position since arriving in Pittsburgh. If he excels, the Steelers may consider offering him a new deal, potentially losing some leverage in the process.

For now, the Steelers are taking a risk by waiting to see how things play out. History suggests that a wait-and-see approach is often the wisest strategy in such situations.
