New York Islanders have recently signed forward and restricted free agent Kyle MacLean to a three-year contract. The 25-year-old MacLean, son of Isles assistant coach John MacLean, impressed during training camp and preseason but did not make it to the opening night roster. However, he received his first NHL opportunity in mid-January and quickly established himself as a regular on the team’s fourth line.
MacLean showcased his aggressive two-way game, demonstrating strong forechecking skills and a solid hockey IQ. Mathew Barzal praised MacLean’s underrated skill and ability to make plays on the ice. MacLean made an impact in key moments, scoring his first NHL goal in just his sixth game and contributing to the Islanders’ playoff-clinching victory.
During his rookie year, MacLean scored four goals, had five assists, and registered 60 hits in 32 games. Head coach Patrick Roy plans to have him compete for an extended bottom-six role during the upcoming season. The teammates and coaching staff are excited about MacLean’s future with the team.
