Booking.com is warning travelers about the increasing threat of travel fraud due to artificial intelligence (AI), as reported by BBC. The booking site has seen a significant increase in fraud cases, with a 900 percent spike in the past year and a half. Security director Marnie Wilking emphasizes the surge in phishing cases, especially since the introduction of generative AI tools like ChatGPT. These tools make it easier for scammers to mimic realistic emails, making them harder to detect.

To combat phishing and prevent theft of login details, Wilking recommends using an additional security check, such as entering a code sent to your phone, as the best way to protect against fraudulent messages. She also advises hotels to implement two-factor authentication on their booking platforms.

In response to the growing threat of AI-fueled scams, Booking.com is utilizing its own AI technology to block fraudulent messages. It is a constant battle to stay ahead of scammers who are using AI to launch sophisticated attacks on unsuspecting travelers and hospitality businesses.

To safeguard against travel fraud and phishing attempts, Wilking advises travelers to contact their bank immediately if they suspect any fraudulent activity. By blocking their bank account and informing their bank promptly, travelers can mitigate the risk of financial loss due to scams and phishing schemes.
