Joel Makin, a Welsh squash player, has made history by becoming the first Welshman to reach the British Open semi-finals since David Evans won the tournament in 2000. Makin’s victory over world champion Diego Elias in the quarter-finals was a stunning display of skill and determination. The 29-year-old won the match 11-9, 11-9, 4-11, 11-8 at the Birmingham Rep Theatre.

After his win, Makin expressed his excitement and confidence, stating that he believed he had the ability to win. Despite not having recorded a win at the British Open before this tournament, Makin showed great composure and skill on the court. His victory marks a significant moment for Welsh squash and ends a 24-year wait for a Welsh men’s semi-finalist at the prestigious event.

Having won the Manchester Open trophy just two weeks ago, Makin is in great form heading into the semi-finals where he will face world number one Ali Farag of Egypt. Makin expressed his readiness for the challenge and acknowledged the tough competition ahead. With a positive mindset and determination, Makin is focused on claiming the title at the British Open.

In addition to Makin’s impressive run, Georgina Kennedy of Britain will compete in her quarter-final match against world champion Nouran Gohar while Hania El Hammamy of Egypt takes on Tinne Gilis of Belgium in women’s draw matches. The competition remains fierce with high-caliber matches expected in upcoming rounds. Friday’s quarter-final matches will showcase more talent and skill as players vie for British Open titles.

Overall, squash fans can expect an exciting week filled with thrilling matches as players strive to become champions of Britain’s most prestigious squash tournament.

The women’s draw is also packed with some talented players such as Georgina Kennedy from Britain who will compete against world champion Nouran Gohar while Hania El Hammamy from Egypt will face Tinne Gilis from Belgium in their quarter final matches respectively.

With only four players remaining in each draw after last week’s eliminations, there are still some challenges ahead for these athletes before they can claim victory at Wembley Arena.

It’s also worth noting that both Joelle King (New Zealand) and Sarah Devine (Australia) have already reached their respective semifinals in women’s singles play.
