The Napa Valley Wine Train is a well-known way to explore the wine country of Napa Valley, with its luxurious rides through the valley showcasing more than 400 wineries. But now, the train is taking steps to protect the environment by going green. Conductor Nathan Davis has introduced a new diesel engine that is the cleanest in its class worldwide, named the 1864 in honor of the rail line’s founding year. This engine meets Environmental Protection Agency standards and produces nearly zero emissions, replacing an old engine that used to belch black smoke as it traveled through the valley.

The transition to this new eco-friendly engine has been met with appreciation from engineer Artemus Rogerson, who appreciates its quieter and smoother ride. The passengers and operators on the train can no longer hear the engine running as it moves smoothly through the region. Davis plans to have his entire fleet of trains running on green technology by 2025, showing a commitment to protecting the delicate Napa Valley environment.

Davis acknowledges that change can be slow in any industry but is determined to keep moving forward with green initiatives. The Napa Valley Wine Train’s transition to a more environmentally friendly operation is a step in the right direction for sustainable tourism in the region, as it sets an example for others in the industry to follow.
