The Miami Marlins have decided to part ways with outfielder Avisaíl García, designating him for assignment on Tuesday. Although García signed a four-year, $53 million deal before the 2022 season, his tenure with the team was marked by injuries and poor offensive production.

In his first season with the team, García played in just 98 games and hit .224 with eight home runs and 35 RBI. Last season, his production declined further, appearing in only 37 games and hitting three home runs. This season, he played in 18 games before another injury setback.

García faced criticism from Marlins fans during the team’s opening homestand this season. Before joining the Marlins, García had a strong season with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2021, hitting 29 home runs and driving in 86 runs. He had previously made an All-Star team as a member of the Chicago White Sox in 2017.

Despite these struggles, the Marlins are obligated to pay him for the remainder of the season and $12 million in 2025, with a buyout of over $5 million for 2026. Skip Schumaker, the Marlins manager, acknowledged García’s contributions to the game but ultimately decided that it was time to move on from the veteran outfielder.
