Flat feet are a common condition that occurs when the inside of the foot touches the ground without forming an arch. This can result in several issues, including the collapse of the heel inward or an outward turning of the foot due to its complex three-dimensional structure. While flat feet are normal in children as they grow and develop motor skills, around 25 percent of teenagers and adults may not develop an arch in their feet or may only have a partial arch.

If pain or functional impairments are present, it is essential to consult an orthopedist for evaluation and potential treatment options. However, for children with flat feet who do not experience pain or limitations, special treatments like shoes, insoles, or splints are not necessary and will not alter the natural development of the foot arch. Some studies suggest that walking barefoot or in soft, unsupported shoes can strengthen foot muscles and promote arch formation. If a child complains of pain or functional issues, a consultation with an orthopedist is recommended for further assessment.

During an examination, an orthopedist will assess the foot’s position at rest, while standing, and standing on the tip of the toes to determine if the foot is flat but flexible or flat and stiff. Muscle strength, range of motion, and any structural abnormalities will also be evaluated to determine the appropriate treatment plan. Non-surgical treatments like supportive shoes, insoles, physical therapy, or rest are typically recommended for pain or functional issues, while surgical options are considered for persistent symptoms despite non-surgical interventions.
