Samsung Electronics recently conducted a study in Europe that revealed that most people spend 86% of their time thinking about household tasks, rather than actually doing them. This “invisible load” refers to the mental and physical tension before beginning tasks, leading to significant consequences for the time spent at home. To address this issue, Samsung collaborated with Mo Gawdat, former Chief Business Officer of Google, to develop an index that aims to rebalance the relationship between thinking and doing for household tasks.
The survey involved over 6,000 participants in Europe and found that on average, each person takes on at least seven household tasks per week, dedicating over 30 hours to them – which is comparable to a full-time job. Additionally, over half of respondents reported being stressed much of the time and many found it difficult to maintain concentration on daily activities. The growing impact of the cost of living crisis exacerbated the situation, with rising energy costs making household chores more stressful and difficult to manage. Despite the availability of advanced home technologies, Europeans tend to spend more time on mental preparation than actually carrying out household tasks.
Mo Gawdat commented on the Invisible Burden Index, emphasizing the importance of managing household tasks to improve overall well-being. Nathan Sheffield, Head of IOT and SmartThings at Samsung Europe, highlighted the role of SmartThings in simplifying and automating domestic activities to optimize time spent at home. Together with Samsung and Mo Gawdat’s insights into managing workload across Europe and awareness about technology’s benefits in managing the invisible load can help optimize time spent at home and improve overall well-being.
