Florida has recently passed a law making it illegal for individuals to sleep in public spaces or parks within four months. While state leaders believe this will encourage those in need to seek assistance from shelters and programs, Aaron Swift of the Homeless Leadership Alliance of Pinellas warns that this could lead to more challenges for homeless individuals. As a result, homeless shelters are now preparing for an increase in demand for services.

Meanwhile, breast cancer remains a leading cause of death for women in the United States, claiming over 40,000 lives each year according to the Centers for Disease Control. A study conducted in April 2024 revealed that only 65% of women between the ages of 50-74 with three or more health-related social needs are up to date with their mammograms. These social needs include isolation, job loss, financial struggles, lack of transportation, high healthcare costs, and overall dissatisfaction with life. Women facing three or more of these challenges are less likely to undergo regular mammograms.

To raise awareness and funds for breast cancer prevention, AdventHealth is hosting a Women’s Health and Cancer Prevention event on June 22nd. For just $10, attendees can hear from leading health experts on various topics such as cervical, digestive, and breast cancer, heart health, and more. The event will also feature a marketplace, health screenings, and resources for attendees. All ticket proceeds will go towards the Kay Meyer Breast Care Center to assist patients who may not be able to afford mammograms and biopsies.

Diagnostic Radiology Specialist Rachel Burke at AdventHealth Tampa emphasizes the importance of starting annual mammograms at age 40. She explains that small abnormalities can be identified early through these screenings
