Young and teenage boys are at an increased risk of developing depression, which is often left undiagnosed and untreated. According to a recent study, boys are not seeking mental health care as often as girls, possibly due to societal expectations that they remain strong and do not show vulnerability. This can lead to internalized emotions, aggression, irritability, and a short fuse in boys.

Family therapist Jay Barnett explains that this lack of emotional expression can have long-term consequences for young men. It may result in difficulties in self-regulation and increased aggression in adulthood if not addressed promptly. A study published in the Journal of Pediatrics revealed a significant decrease in antidepressant prescriptions for young men in 2020, raising concerns about their future mental health.

Without proper treatment and emotional support, these boys may struggle to develop healthy coping mechanisms and communication skills, which could impact their relationships and overall quality of life. Experts fear that if the trend continues unchecked, there could be serious implications for the mental health and well-being of young men as they grow older.

There is a need for greater awareness among mental health professionals about the rising rates of depression in young and teenage boys. It is crucial that we address this issue by providing more accessible mental health care services specifically designed for boys to ensure that they receive the support they need to maintain good mental health as they grow into adults.
