The staff shortage that domestic tourism professionals have been complaining about has eased since summer 2023. According to a special analysis by the AMS, employment in the accommodation sector rose by 2 percent in the summer of 2023 to 228,404 people and by 1.5 percent in the winter season to 223,000. At the same time, there was a significant drop in the number of job vacancies reported in tourism. During the last summer season, 26.4 percent fewer vacancies were reported to the AMS compared to the same period the previous year, with an average of 12,000 jobs. In the 2023/24 winter season, the decline in vacancies was slightly lower at 18.7 percent, but still higher than in other sectors.

The Austrian economy has seen a decrease in domestic employment over recent years. However, this has been offset by an increase in non-Austrian workers. The proportion of Austrians among all dependent active employees in the accommodation and catering sector dropped from 48 percent in 2019 to 43 percent in 2023. The part-time rate in this sector was significantly higher than average at 39.2 percent.
