The first geologic aeon in the Earth’s history, known as the Hadean aeon, marked the creation of the moon. This period laid the foundation for an atmosphere enriched with hydrogen, water vapor, and carbon dioxide. Afterwards came the Cryogenian period between 720-630 million years ago, characterized by stable crust and slow evolution. However, this was followed by the first of the Earth’s five mass extinction events during which marine genera diversity plummeted worldwide.
The Silurian was a brief period that began after this event and is part of the Palaeozoic era. In Ancient Greek, Eocene means “new dawn” and marks the start of life-forms’ evolution that still exist today. In 2018, India became the location of our current geologic era’s confirmation by the International Commission on Stratigraphy. Stalagmites found in one of Meghalaya’s longest caves provided evidence of this transition leading to present times. Finally, we have the Jurassic period named after mountains shown in an image.
