On Mother’s Day, a heartbroken tribute was written by Arnelle Floyd for her 6-month-old daughter, Nalani Allen. The post honored Nalani as her world and the joy she brought into her life. However, just a few days later, both Floyd and Nalani’s father, Nathan Allen, were accused of murdering their daughter. The young parents were arrested by Miami-Dade police on first-degree murder charges.

Residents in the Villa Portofino community in Homestead were shocked by the news of Nalani’s death and the circumstances surrounding it. Neighbor Jason Davis expressed his sadness at the tragic loss of a young child, while another neighbor, Marie Adolph, questioned why anyone would have children if they did not want them upon learning about the severe signs of child abuse found on Nalani’s body.

The couple took Nalani to Homestead Hospital, where she was pronounced dead an hour after arrival. Doctors noted no pulse and severe signs of abuse on the infant. A search warrant at the couple’s home uncovered a disarrayed house with holes in the walls and fridge door. Reports of domestic violence in the neighborhood added to the disturbing narrative surrounding Nalani’s death.

Journalists tried to speak with neighbors for more context but most declined to comment citing that details would unfold in court. Floyd and Allen are currently being held without bond as the investigation into Nalani’s tragic death continues.
