Gallstones are a common condition that can be caused by various factors, including rapid weight gain or loss, obesity, poor diet, and lack of exercise. These factors can lead to the formation and growth of gallstones over time. When bile contains too much cholesterol, bilirubin, or not enough bile salts, or when the gallbladder functions abnormally, gallstones can develop.

Dr. Vu Truong Khanh, Head of the Department of Gastroenterology at Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi, advises people with small gallstones to change their lifestyle and understand the risk factors that can increase the size of the stones. People with gallstones smaller than 3 cm in size without symptoms or complications can be monitored periodically without surgery. However, for larger stones or those with symptoms or complications, surgery may be necessary to remove them.

Obesity is a leading factor in the development of gallstones as excess cholesterol in the bile accumulates over time to form stones. Losing weight too quickly through dieting and leading a sedentary lifestyle can also contribute to the formation and growth of gallstones. Age is also a factor as older people are at higher risk due to decreased cholesterol activity.

Regular exercise and a balanced diet are crucial in preventing gallstone formation and improving liver and gallbladder function. Symptoms such as abdominal pain, fever, jaundice, sweating, chills and vomiting should be promptly evaluated and treated to avoid complications such as infection or blockage of the ducts that drain bile from the liver into the small intestine.

It’s essential for individuals who have been diagnosed with gallstones to take steps to manage their condition effectively by making lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy weight through regular exercise and balanced eating habits. Consulting with healthcare professionals is recommended for proper treatment options based on individual circumstances.
