When it comes to our health, the digestive system is one of the most critical components. If it is not functioning properly, a range of symptoms can arise that may indicate various intestinal diseases. As a journalist, I had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Vu Truong Khanh, Head of the Department of Gastroenterology at Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi, who emphasizes the importance of a healthy digestive system for overall health and energy levels.

Abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, and heartburn are common symptoms that can occur when our digestive systems are not working correctly. However, recognizing signs of poor digestive health is crucial for timely examination and appropriate treatment.

Abdominal pain can be caused by various factors such as indigestion or muscle tension. While these conditions are usually not serious, prolonged abdominal pain accompanied by additional symptoms such as fever, blood in the stool, persistent vomiting or abdominal swelling requires medical attention.

Chronic constipation characterized by fewer than three bowel movements per week may have multiple causes such as dietary issues like consuming high-fat foods or lacking fiber in your diet. Dehydration or lack of exercise can also lead to constipation. If symptoms persist despite lifestyle changes like changing your diet and incorporating more water into your daily routine or engaging in regular exercise, a doctor’s evaluation is necessary.

Bloating is another common symptom of poor digestion that can be accompanied by excessive flatulence. Persistent bloating should be taken seriously as it may indicate underlying health issues like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.

Diarrhea lasting more than two weeks may signal gastrointestinal conditions like IBS or other inflammatory bowel diseases requiring medical intervention.

Nausea and vomiting can also be linked to digestive problems and should not be ignored as they could signal underlying issues such as celiac disease or food allergies.

In addition to these symptoms unintentional weight changes and alterations in stool color could also be signs of digestive issues like malnutrition due to an improperly functioning digestive system.

Dr. Khanh advises patients to avoid processed foods and sugary treats; eat slowly and chew food thoroughly; incorporate probiotics into their diet; stay hydrated; exercise regularly; get enough rest; and manage stress levels to improve their overall digestive health.

If symptoms persist despite these lifestyle changes seeking medical advice from a digestive specialist is recommended for further evaluation and treatment.
