The Chicago Cubs have made the decision to designate catcher Yan Gomes for assignment, as reported by ESPN’s Jesse Rogers. Gomes, who is currently batting a career-low .154 with two home runs and 7 RBIs this season, had his 2024 option exercised by the Cubs in November. This move brought him back for his 13th season in the league, his third with the Cubs.

After a disappointing 2022 season where Gomes had a slash line of .235/.260/.365 with 20 extra-base hits and a 72 OPS+, he bounced back in 2023. In 116 games, he recorded 32 extra-base hits and a 93 OPS+. Gomes also proved to be clutch with a .769 OPS with two outs and runners in scoring position.

To fill the void left by Gomes, the Cubs have brought in Tomas Nido, a 30-year-old catcher recently released by the New York Mets. Nido was hitting .229 with three home runs and eight RBIs in 32 games this season. He was a Gold Glove Award finalist in 2022, playing a career-high 98 games and hitting .
