Austria’s conservative party, the ÖVP, has suffered a blow in the recent nationwide election as Herbert Kickl’s Freedom Party achieved a historic win, albeit not as decisively as expected. This victory has given a boost to the conservatives and set off a “chancellor’s duel” between Kickl and Nehammer of the ÖVP.

The breakdown of the coalition between Austria’s conservative and green parties was one of the main issues that led to this duel. The passing of the EU Renaturation Act by Green Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler against the wishes of the ÖVP was a major point of contention that strained relations between the two parties. Despite threats of legal action and complaints, the coalition remains intact for now with concerns about future partnerships and upcoming National Council elections looming over the ÖVP.

As for Nehammer, he is gearing up for a tough fight against Kickl in the upcoming elections. While Kickl is seen as a security risk and right-wing extremist by some, his party’s recent electoral success makes him a formidable opponent. The FPÖ’s rise to first place in the election highlights a shift in Austrian politics, with new voters attracted to its message of opposition to mandatory vaccination, concerns over immigration, and dissatisfaction with economic conditions.

In contrast, while facing allegations of corruption from his past era under Sebastian Kurz, Nehammer remains confident that his party can win by offering real solutions to voters in upcoming elections. Both parties are focused on gaining an edge over their opponents as they campaign hard leading up to polling day.

While Kickl’s victory may have boosted conservative spirits initially, it also marked an end to Austria’s longstanding center-right government coalition between conservatives and greens. As such, both parties are now fighting tooth and nail for every vote leading up to election day.

The outcome of these elections will likely determine whether Austria will continue down its current political path or pivot towards a new direction that reflects public opinion on key issues like immigration, vaccination policies, and economic conditions.
