The American Legion World Series (ALWS) is a national tournament held in Uptown Shelby, North Carolina every August. To ensure the smooth running of the event, the ALWS Executive Committee heavily relies on volunteers to support various functions at Keeter Stadium during the tournament and festival.

Volunteers play an essential role in making the ALWS a success. Chairman Eddie Holbrook emphasized that their efforts are crucial for the successful execution of the event. With more volunteers needed for the 2024 tournament, there are various roles available for individuals to serve such as gatekeepers, ushers, shuttle drivers, concession staff, and festival volunteers.

Gatekeepers are responsible for checking tickets at the main gate during ALWS games. They must be knowledgeable about different types of tickets and how to handle each one. Gatekeepers typically work four-hour shifts during day games. On the other hand, ushers assist ticket holders in finding their seats and must be familiar with Keeter Stadium layout, reserved seating numbering, and accommodation for handicapped fans. They wear yellow vests with “USHER” written on the back for easy recognition by stadium attendees and usually work three-hour shifts.

Concession staff members work in various areas such as the main concession stand, drink and snack tent, and grill. They serve food and beverages to spectators and typically work three-hour shifts, arriving at the stadium one hour before they are scheduled for duty. Shuttle drivers transport attendees from parking lots around Shelby High School to Keeter Stadium and back. Drivers must be familiar with golf cart operations, drive safely and courteously and usually work four-hour shifts.

Festival volunteers assist with a range of activities during the American Legion World Series Festival in Uptown Shelby, including children’s booths, setup, breakdown and more. The festival takes place on Aug 10 while the 2024 tournament is set from Aug 15-20th those interested in volunteering can apply online at www
