Thailand’s land bridge project, estimated to cost one trillion baht ($27.2 billion), has caught the attention of DB World, the third largest container port operator globally. Recently, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, the Chairman and CEO of DB World Group, met with Prime Minister Sritha Thavisin to explore potential investment opportunities in this major initiative. The land bridge project aims to establish a logistical network connecting Chumphon Province overlooking the Gulf of Thailand to Ranong in the Andaman Sea.

DB World’s involvement in the project could bring substantial economic growth to Thailand. Established in 2005, DB World boasts a vast global network encompassing logistics services, freight transportation, port operations, maritime services, and free trade zones. The company handles 70 million container units annually, serves approximately 70,000 ships (10% of global container traffic), and operates in 82 ports across 40 countries.

Surya Jungrungriangkit, the Minister of Transport, disclosed that discussions revolved around a joint venture for the land bridge project. He expressed pleasure at DB World’s interest in the project and cited its international reputation and vast experience in the industry. The ministry emphasized that the dialogue highlighted the project’s attractiveness to investors and expressed confidence in its progress under the current administration.

If approved by investors and lawmakers alike, the land bridge project could significantly enhance Thailand’s economy by potentially generating up to 1 trillion baht (approximately $27 billion). This would boost job creation efforts and increase revenue streams for local businesses. The Ministry of Transport recently conducted roadshows to attract investors locally and globally as part of its efforts to push forward a draft law on the Southern Economic Corridor. It is anticipated that this draft will be submitted to Cabinet by September for further approval before construction can begin on this ambitious infrastructure project.

Overall, DB World’s interest in Thailand’s land bridge project highlights its potential for significant economic growth and development opportunities within Southeast Asia’s growing logistics sector. As more companies continue to invest in regional infrastructure projects like this one
