Thailand’s government has decided to reconsider the legalization of cannabis, with Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin calling for a ban on recreational consumption. This move comes after concerns about the potential negative impacts of increased cannabis consumption, particularly among young people, following legalization.

Thailand initially made headlines in June 2022 for legalizing the cultivation and consumption of cannabis, but this is expected to change by the end of the year. The Center for Addiction Research at Chulalongkorn University reported a significant increase in cannabis consumption following legalization, with young people being the biggest consumers.

However, health ministry statistics have shown an increase in psychological issues related to cannabis use, which has further fueled calls for stricter regulation and a return to allowing cannabis use only for medical purposes. Experts like Kitty, who have been advocating for cannabis legalization, have expressed disappointment in the lack of regulation and the continued prevalence of illegal products in the market.

Despite initial anticipation of a booming cannabis industry following legalization, uncertainty surrounding regulation and enforcement has raised concerns about the long-term effects of legalization on public health and safety.
