In the early 1990s, Peru experienced a surge in telecommunications advancements, leading to rapid evolution. From landline phones and cable TV to the internet and high-speed internet, these technologies have transformed our lives and contributed significantly to the country’s economic and social growth. The future looks promising as new technologies like artificial intelligence come into play. A recent webinar, “The impact of telecommunications in Peru,” was organized by Telefónica for their 30th anniversary in the country. The webinar was broadcast on El Comercio’s Facebook fan page and YouTube channel.

During the discussion, experts highlighted the importance of investing in infrastructure to accelerate social equality and boost economic productivity. According to INEI figures, the telecommunications sector’s share in GDP has tripled over the past 30 years. Moreover, private investments in telecommunications have grown despite a decline in private investments overall.

Telefónica del Perú’s CEO, Elena Maestre, emphasized the company’s efforts to provide solutions promoting digital inclusion across all regions of Peru, including rural areas. Through initiatives like “Internet for all,” Telefónica aims to reduce digital divides and connect more people. The company has already connected millions of people in rural communities with optical fiber playing a crucial role in bridging gaps.

The panel also discussed digital transformation’s significance for Peru’s development, especially amid recent challenges such as the pandemic. To provide better services, increase communication opportunities and expand prospects across sectors like health and education, commitment to digital transformation is vital. Cooperation between private telecommunications companies and the Peruvian State is also crucial for driving growth and productivity in the country. Raúl Pérez-Reyes, Minister of Transportation and Communications, underscored how essential telecommunications infrastructure is for economic development.

In conclusion, telecommunications advancements have had a profound impact on Peru’s economy and society over the past three decades. With continued investment in infrastructure and commitment to digital transformation, there are endless possibilities for further growth and development ahead.
