At the Spanish Grand Prix, Alex Dunne made history as the first Irish driver to stand on a Formula 3 podium. The 18-year-old teenager finished in second place in the sprint race, behind home driver Mari Boya.

Dunne had been putting pressure on Boya for third when race leaders Santiago Ramos and Sami Meguetounif collided on the third lap. After a safety car period, Dunne was preparing for another challenge on the home driver for the lead when a late safety car came out, neutralizing the race until the chequered flag.

This second place finish was Dunne’s best result of the Formula 3 season, despite previously winning the 2022 British F4 title and being the runner-up in the 2023 GB3 Championship. As a driver for MP Motorsport, Dunne moved up to 16th in the standings and will start from ninth place for Sunday’s feature race, which will also mark the 100th race in Formula 3’s history.

Formula 3 is a support series on the Formula 1 calendar that provides a platform for rising talents like Dunne to showcase their skills and compete on an international stage.
