A rare juvenile T. rex fossil, affectionately known as “Teen Rex,” was discovered by three young explorers in the badlands of North Dakota. The two brothers, Jessin and Liam Fisher, along with their dad Sam Fisher and cousin Kaiden Madsen, stumbled upon the fossil while on a hike in 2022. The boys named it “The Brother.”

Last summer, the group returned to the discovery site with Dr. Tyler Lyson’s team of paleontologists to excavate the fossil. The boys were fascinated by the piece of T. rex skull and teeth that they found. Liam expressed his excitement about having bones sticking out of rock while Dr. Lyson commended their passion for discovery and how it advanced science and deepened our understanding of the natural world.

The young explorers were recognized for their remarkable discovery with a bronze replica of the T. rex tooth, which visitors can view at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science’s temporary exhibition called “Discovering Teen Rex.” The story of their discovery was captured on film and is featured in a new 40-minute documentary called “T.REX,” which will be shown in the DMNS’s giant screen Infinity Theater.
