Wolfe County is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, especially during the summer months when high temperatures make it ideal for activities like hiking and camping at Red River Gorge. However, with more people flocking to the area, the Wolfe County Search and Rescue team is facing an increase in emergencies.

The Wolfe County Search and Rescue team has implemented a new program called SARTopo to help track individuals who may be lost. This technology allows them to send a text or link to someone’s phone, enabling real-time tracking as they move through the woods. Public Information Officer Drew Stevens explained that emergencies in the area can range from injuries in the backcountry to lost hikers, with heat-related illnesses also being a common issue.

Stevens emphasized the importance of this new tool in ensuring the safety of both the team and those in need of rescue. By accurately tracking individuals, they can minimize risks and make informed decisions about deployment. Avoiding unnecessary deployments is especially crucial, as it reduces the potential dangers faced by rescue personnel. With the implementation of SARTopo, the Wolfe County Search and Rescue team can better serve the community and handle emergencies more efficiently. By staying on top of technological advancements, they are able to provide a higher level of care and support to those in need.
