A Nevada-based patent owner, C47 Technologies LLC, has filed a lawsuit against TCL Technology Group Corp alleging that its smartphones are infringing on patent-protected camera technology. The company claims that the cameras in TCL’s 10, 20, and 30 model smartphones use methods that are similar to those outlined in US Patent No. 10,984,605.

However, recent reports have revealed that the patent in question actually expired in October 2022, according to Bloomberg Law estimates. The ‘605 patent specifically deals with “camera arrangements with backlighting detection,” as stated in the complaint. C47 claims that the technology and method covered by the patent help to improve the quality of images taken with the cameras.

Despite this revelation, C47 is still moving forward with the lawsuit against TCL. It remains to be seen how the court will rule on this case and whether the expired patent will have any impact on the outcome.
