On Tuesday, June 4, the Swiss House of Representatives (parliament) voted against recognizing the “state of Palestine.” The proposal put forth by the Social Democratic Party was rejected by 131 deputies, while 61 were in favor of recognizing Palestine, with two abstentions. Only members of the Social Democrats and Greens supported the recognition of Palestine.

Despite the rejection, discussions surrounding the recognition of Palestine are ongoing, with varying opinions among Swiss parliament members. The vote highlights the complex nature of the Israel-Palestine conflict and the differing perspectives on how to move towards a peaceful resolution.

The Federal Council has stated that it continues to advocate for a two-state solution in which both Israel and Palestine can coexist within recognized borders. However, it believes that the timing is not right to officially recognize Palestine. The decision to reject the proposal was made based on this assessment.
