Russian President Vladimir Putin is eyeing Gotland as his ultimate goal in the Baltic Sea, according to Swedish armed forces commander-in-chief Micael Biden. He warned that if Russia were to seal off the Baltic Sea, it would be a threat to lives across the region and called it a disastrous impact on all Baltic Sea states.

To prevent Putin from turning the Baltic Sea into his “playground,” Biden emphasized Sweden’s strategic positioning on Gotland as crucial for maintaining security and assisting other NATO states. However, he also warned that if Russia invaded Gotland, it could open the door for the country to threaten NATO members from the sea, destabilizing peace in the Nordic and Baltic regions.

Biden also highlighted environmental risks associated with old Russian oil tankers in the Baltic Sea, warning that Russia could orchestrate an environmental disaster with devastating consequences for Europe if these tankers were used maliciously. He expressed worries that Russia could exploit these tankers for covert military activities against NATO, posing a significant threat to regional stability.

As tensions escalate in the Baltic Sea, Biden’s remarks shed light on growing security challenges and potential risks posed by Russia’s ambitions in the region. Addressing these threats and fortifying defenses against potential incursions is critical for safeguarding peace and stability in the Baltic and Nordic regions.
