Recently, a 61-year-old woman named Mai experienced back pain and chills. Unaware of the cause, she sought medical attention and was diagnosed with septic shock due to a blockage in her left ureteral-pelvic connection caused by a 12 mm stone in her kidney.

Dr. Pham The Anh from the Department of Urology at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City explained that the stone was causing grade 2 hydronephrosis due to the blockage in the ureter. This led to bacteria in the urine entering the bloodstream, causing septic shock. The medical team quickly administered vasoactive drugs and antibiotics to stabilize Mai’s condition before transferring her to the ICU.

In the ICU, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Tung treated Mai’s underlying conditions, including kidney stones, type 2 diabetes, and dyslipidemia. She underwent various treatments, including antibiotics, blood pressure stabilization, and hemodialysis to eliminate toxins from her body. A ureteral catheter was also inserted to relieve blockage and divert infected urine.

To treat the kidney stones, a flexible scope was used to approach the stones and crush them using laser energy. This minimally invasive procedure helped Mai recover quickly with less pain and blood loss. The doctors emphasized the importance of early detection of kidney stones to avoid complications and recommended regular health check-ups for prevention.

Patients with kidney stones are advised to follow their doctor’s treatment instructions, stay hydrated, and maintain a healthy diet to prevent further complications. By taking proactive steps and seeking medical attention promptly, patients can avoid dangerous complications associated with kidney stones.

Mai’s story serves as a reminder that even if you don’t experience any symptoms related to your kidneys, it’s important not to ignore them completely as they could be an indication of an underlying condition that requires immediate attention. Regular check-ups can help detect issues early on so that they can be addressed before they become more severe or life-threatening like what happened to Mai who had no idea she had a stone until she experienced back pain and chills.
