The first round of the Norway Chess 2024 tournament has come to a close, with some exciting results. GM Hikaru Nakamura, who has not been ranked in the top three players in the world for over nine years, defeated GM Ding Liren and now holds a rating of over 2800. This puts him in second place, just behind GM Fabiano Caruana who lost two consecutive games. One of these losses was against Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, who is currently leading the tournament. In addition to this, women’s world champion Ju Wenjun won all five matches in armageddon but is currently in third place in the standings.

The Women’s Norway Chess tournament has also seen some exciting action so far. GM Vaishali Rameshbabu has maintained her lead by winning against GM Lei Tingjie in armageddon. GM Anna Muzychuk also won her second classical game in a row against GM Pia Cramling, moving her to second place, only one point behind the leader.
