Christian McCaffrey, the star running back for the San Francisco 49ers, has been named the cover athlete for Madden 25 by EA Sports. This marks a significant milestone as it is the first time in over a decade that a running back has appeared on the Madden cover. The last running back to grace the cover was in 2013 with Adrian Peterson and Barry Sanders on legacy consoles and next-gen systems, respectively, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the game.
As a reigning Offensive Player of the Year, McCaffrey led the league in various stats during the 2023-24 season, such as scrimmage yards, rushing yards, and total touchdowns. After being traded to San Francisco in October 2022, McCaffrey has quickly become a standout player for the team. In an official statement via an EA Sports press release, McCaffrey expressed his excitement about being on the cover of Madden NFL, calling it a career achievement and an honor shared with his teammates, coaches, and 49er Faithful.
Mike Mahar, Senior Production Director at EA Sports noted that McCaffrey was the most popular running back in last year’s game with players scoring over 450 million touchdowns with him. With a recently signed two-year $38 million contract extension, McCaffrey remains one of the highest-paid running backs in the league. The 49ers had a successful season in which they went 12-5 and clinched their eighth NFC title. They will aim to return to the Super Bowl starting with their upcoming opener against New York Jets on September 9th.
