In his early days as department director, Alex Adams made significant changes to prioritize child welfare. He eliminated 170 vacant positions and deemed four committees as unnecessary. In an effort to promote adoption and remove obstacles that may deter prospective adoptive parents, Adams lowered adoption fees and revised policies related to Idaho’s foster care system.
During a department board meeting, Adams emphasized the importance of simplifying the adoption process for Idaho residents who are willing to provide a home for children in need. He stressed the need to promote adoption and remove any barriers that may deter prospective adoptive parents. As a result, there are currently no application or home study fees for those interested in adoption or fostering, and the department has expedited its response time to applicants.
In the future, the department plans to formally recognize foster families who have developed a significant relationship with a child for at least six months as kin. This move aims to strengthen the support system for both foster children and their caregivers, ultimately improving the overall welfare of children in the state.
