On Monday, Steve Bannon, a prominent American right-wing populist and former White House adviser to Donald Trump, reported to a federal prison in the northeastern United States to begin serving his sentence for obstructing the congressional investigation into the January 6, 2021, Capitol assault.

As he arrived at the Danbury prison in Connecticut, Bannon was met by a small crowd of supporters waving “Trump 2024” flags, including Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene. Despite no longer officially working for the Republican candidate, Bannon assured Trump of his continued support and vowed to promote his re-election through his podcast “War Room.”

In an interview on his show prior to entering prison, Bannon spoke about recent victories of the far-right movement in European elections and said “our movement is having its moment.” His sentence for obstructing Congress was handed down in October 2022 and upheld on appeal in May 2024.

Bannon predicted “all hell” would break loose on January 6 and was in communication with then-President Trump as supporters stormed the Capitol. His entry into prison coincided with a delay in Trump’s federal trial over his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. Another former Trump adviser, Peter Navarro, also began serving a four-month prison sentence for the same offense in March 2024.

As Bannon begins his time behind bars, it is unclear how long he will remain incarcerated or what impact this will have on his future political career. However, it is clear that he remains committed to promoting right-wing populist ideals and supporting Donald Trump’s re-election efforts.
